First day of LWP 2011

Today was the first day of the Lehua Writing Project. One thing I loved about today was the sacred writing time. I had not had a chance to just sit and write like this for a very long time. I didn't realize how much I had missed it. I really enjoyed writing and adding to the teaching narrative as well as the Name poem.

After the writing, having a focused but open-ended-ish format for the sharing made it so that I could focus on the crafting of the person's writing for the first reading, and on the second reading take in some of the deeper elements of their narrative. This type of sharing, along with the "shoulder partner" gave me some ideas of how to get my students to write more and give more constructive comments to their writing buddies.

One of the things that I will take with me from this first day is "No apologies, no explanations." This was a new thought for me in relation to my writing, and it was really hard for me to keep to this during my sharing.

Writing has always been a passion of mine, I used to sit and write stories, narratives, and poems down often. Getting back into the swing of writing things has definitely made me realize how important this is to my life and how I need to incorporate it back into my routine.
